Kenya

Kenya offers a fascinating mixture of adventure, excellent wildlife, and authentic Masai culture.  From the rocky foothills of Mount Kenya to the dry plains of Samburu, this magnificent country has an incredible diversity of experiences which can be enjoyed on horseback, camel back, on foot, or in a safari vehicle.  In this sense, it is a great destination for families and active travellers looking for unique ways of experiencing the wilderness. At the end of a busy safari, Lamu is a peaceful coastal haven with an intriguing history.  I choose lodges that have an authentic feel and make you feel as if you are staying at a home away from home.

Day 1:  On arrival at Nairobi International Airport, a private driver will collect you and take you through Nairobi National Park to a lovely owner-run lodge on the border of the park, observing wildlife along the way.  Dinner at the lodge and rest for the evening.

Day 2-5:  After breakfast, you will be transferred to Wilson Airport in time for your flight to Lewa Conservancy.  Lewa is home to several endangered species including the rhino and the ‘Northern Five,’ which are species unique to the area.  If you crave adventure, you can go horse riding, walk to a waterfall, do a walking safari, or take a helicopter flip in addition to game driving.  Stay at a small luxury tented lodge inside the conservancy.

Day 6-8:  Enjoy a relaxed morning, then take a game drive and transfer to Lewa Airstrip for your flight to the Masai Mara where you stay in a less crowded conservancy along an unfenced border with the national park, allowing a quieter experience of wildlife.  In peak migration season, you will see thousands of wildebeest gathering in huge herds in the open savanna. You can also do a walking safari or even enjoy a night under the stars fly camping, if you want an adventurous add-on.

Day 9-12: One last breakfast in the wilderness, and your driver/guide will take you to the nearest airstrip for your fight to Lamu (via Nairobi) for a relaxing few days at this fascinating ancient island!  Upon arrival in Lamu, a private driver will collect you then help you catch a boat transfer to Shela and your private villa where you have three days to go dhow sailing, snorkelling, explore the ancient streets of Stone Town, or just relax with a good book.

Day 13:  After a leisurely morning on the beach, you take a boat then road transfer to the Lamu Airport in time for your domestic and then international flight home.
